The city grew too fast. They relied on a tax base that fled the city as soon as the jobs started to dry up. Easy come, easier go?

You were right about the stupidity of the person who thought buying auto insurance is the same as forcing health care, but I'm afraid you were only partially right about why. Car insurance is forced by the STATES - states are allowed to require you to do any number of things, the FEDERAL government is not allowed to force you to buy things. Our government has been set up with specific limits on state and federal rights and there are differences between them - continue your rant but please, too - continue to read.

Cheers!

I like the way you filter responsibility into every conversation about education. Your view on higher education is right on. If you want it bad enough, you should earn it. There are some supporters of UNLV, believe it or not, that are working to make the university more self-sufficient and to use UNLV's strengths to help them achieve that goal. The unfortunate thing is that these efforts are mostly made by outside agents who care about UNLV. One example is the effort to leverage UNLV's capability to product patents and intellectual property to provide support for the colleges that generate those discoveries. There is a big push by a group of entrepreneurs to develop this spirit by pooling money to support new technology companies in Las Vegas based on technology developed at UNLV. I know you believe in the free enterprise, entrepreneural approach to America's future. I just wanted to let you know that, despite a great many nay-sayers in the UNLV administration, this movement is building and, because of the types of people involved (you probably know some of them), it will probably be successful. I just wanted you to know that there are some UNLV supporters that care about the future of the State, not just the future of the university. I enjoy listening to your constant admonition of the "give it to me" attitude and will continue to listen to your show. I just wanted you to know that not every UNLV devotee believes education is a right and that students should learn to make their own way with the skills they possess and can develop.

Hi Heidi. Don't always agree with you, but enjoy your show. Regarding the Oklahoma pharmacist, first degree murder as defined by statute in OK: "A person commits murder in the first degree when that person unlawfully and with malice aforethought causes the death of another human being. Malice is that deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a human being, which is manifested by external circumstances capable of proof." Sounds like his crime, in this case. Intent is the key. Manslaughter is defined as a homocide "perpetrated without a design to effect death," i.e. no intent to kill. It sounds like this guy intended to kill the low life who tried to rob his store.

I know you are passionate about this issue, Heidi. But have you considered the unintended consequences of using government intervention? In the long run, it may be worse for the very animals you are trying to protect. A quote that is attributed to Ronald Reagan may suffice: "The scariest sentence in the English language is: We're from the government, and we're here to help." I know you feel that this law is the right thing to do. So did the people that support the laws you rail against every day.
